Preparing for Christmas | Shepherds | Luke 2.15-16 | revivetexas.org/blog

“When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, ‘Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.’ So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger.”
 Luke 2.15-16

We all have a part to play. From the wise men to the angels, from the innkeeper to the shepherds, it took many to complete Act 1 of the birth of the Christ.

Today we are focusing on the shepherds and their role as witness bearers to the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem.

The shepherds were common men taking care of their business in the fields that starry night. Being from Texas, I compare them to our cowboys—the times when they rode the range, slept out in cow camps to watch the cattle, fight off Indians, and protect the herd (think of your favorite Louis L’Amour short story). The shepherds couldn’t have been much different. They were rugged, uneducated, but reliable sources to seek out as witnesses.

The rest of the story is found in Luke 2:8–14: “And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.’

“Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.’”

The shepherds did not initiate an encounter with the Lord. He came to them through an angel to involve them in His work. The divine favor shown to these humble shepherds was nothing short of amazing. Just when they least expected an encounter with God, He showed up and reminded them of the part they would play for all eternity.

We too have a part to play, sinners though we are. We are invited to join God in His work. Although we may not herald the coming of the Christ child, we are forever welcomed to participate with God in His divine activity in this world.

It’s two days until Christmas—will you welcome God’s assignment for you this day?

“O Lord God, You are faithful. My love often fails, weakness gives way to sin, but Your holiness and righteousness abound. Come now, Holy Spirit; shield me with Your promise, strengthen me with Your truth. Help me accept the assignment you have given to me to love and serve your name. For you are good and your love endures forever.” Amen
