“The soldiers also came up and mocked him. They offered him wine vinegar 37 and said, “If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.” 38 There was a written notice above him, which read: this is the king of the jews. 39 One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!” 40 But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence?41 We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.” 42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.[d]” 43 Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.” Luke 23.36-43
It’s good to know where you are going. When you are on a trip or a vacation, it’s good to have a plan. We returned from Colorado yesterday, and every bit of our return was planned. It would be silly to try to get home without making travel plans.
The thief on the cross—the one who repented—was given a plan. Jesus told him exactly where he was going: “Today you will be with me in paradise.” It was unexpected, but so welcome. This first thief was just as guilty as the next, but because he confessed and put his trust in Jesus, his salvation and eternal destination were secure.
The second criminal, who mocked Jesus, was not given a travel plan. He rejected the only One who could save him. Consider that: he’s hanging next to Salvation—God—Messiah—and he makes the worst mistake of his life. Rather than repenting, submitting, and reaching out by faith for help, he hurls insults at Jesus. One man made the best decision ever, and the second made the worst.
Jesus’ final hours upon the cross were horrific. He who knew no sin was suddenly carrying the sin of all the world. Your sin was on Him. My sin was on Him. And He was willing to take it. He is also willing to save anyone and everyone. From the most innocent child to the hardened criminal, the blood of Christ covers our debts one hundred percent. This is why we live in joy, peace, and confidence. We have assurance of our salvation because of what Jesus did for us.
I am so glad. This makes me happy. The gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ. Have you received it? Have you trusted in Jesus with your heart this day? Why not turn to Him? Ask for the filling of the Holy Spirit. You can know God like a Father—a loving, caring, forgiving Dad.
Turn to Jesus, and you will find your eternal plans are made secure.
“O Lord God, You are good and loving. Come now, Holy Spirit, fill me with Your love. Strengthen my days and fulfill Your plans in me. Guide each step so I might know Your love and grace. For You are good and Your love endures forever.” Amen.
