“Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. 8 Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover.” 9 “Where do you want us to prepare for it?” they asked. 10 He replied, “As you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house that he enters, 11 and say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 12 He will show you a large room upstairs, all furnished. Make preparations there.” 13 They left and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover.” Luke 22.7-13
We often read over this pretty quickly but in truth it is pretty amazing and mysterious. So the time for the Passover has come. It will be the disciples last with Jesus. And they have no place to host it. Jesus tells Peter to go into Jerusalem and as you enter the city you will find a man carrying a jar of water who will meet you. How? What? Is this an angel? Imagine Peter’s faith just to follow Jesus’ very vague instructions. I mean it happened with the donkey why not a man with a jar of water?
Then, follow him to the house he enter, says Jesus, and say to the owner that the Teacher needs a place for the Passover with his disciples. An “upper room” will be presented to you will all the furnishings. “Make preparations there,” Jesus said. Like how the heck is this going to happen!
But God works in mysterious ways that we could never imagine. He goes before us. His Spirit makes a way. The angels send messages and show how, supernaturally, God will provide. What is required will be revealed. Jesus sends Peter out and the disciples “found things just as Jesus had told them.” So they prepared the Passover.
Doesn’t God do the same for those who love and seek him? Doesn’t he provide a way when there is no way? Even when we are unaware, God is working in his providence to care for his people.
