The Gospel of Luke | The Shema | Luke 10.25-28 | revivetexas.org/blog

On one occasion, an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” “What is written in the Law?” Jesus replied. “How do you read it?” He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’[c]; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[d]” “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.” Luke 10:25-28

Aren’t we all concerned about what comes next? I mean, when we die, what then? The teacher of the law was equally concerned. He was not as focused on “living for God” as he was about dying and ending up in eternity. But at least he was honest!

So Jesus responds with a question, as He often does: “What do you think?” or “How do you read it?”

The religious leader answers with the Shema: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength… and love your neighbor as yourself.” Jesus doesn’t rebuke him. Instead, He replies, “You have answered correctly. Do this and you will live.”

But as we know, saying the right thing doesn’t always equate to living the right way. So Jesus follows up with the parable of the Good Samaritan to ensure the man’s words match his actions.

What is eternal life? How do we get there? What does it mean to truly live?

Eternal life begins today. Jesus said, “The Kingdom of God is among you.” Therefore, eternal life is experienced now — as we walk with God in love and obedience. We get there by trusting Jesus, by having faith, and our actions spring forth as a result of our love for God. Truly living means we have abundant life now and eternal life to come.

Jesus said He is the way, the truth, and the life — meaning it all passes through Him. Loving God fully and loving others is important, but our devotion to God must be first and foremost. Walking with the Lord is a daily endeavor in which we are bound by commitment and faith.

Are you walking with the Lord? How might you continue seeking life in Christ? Turn to Him and trust. Receive and wait. Then you will know that the Lord is good.

“O Father, on this Sunday, I give You praise. In the midst of the storms, I glorify Your name. Even when I do not feel like it, I exalt You. For You walk with me and call me by name. Come now, Holy Spirit, fill me with Your power and love. For You are good and Your love endures forever.” Amen.
